Becoming a Surface Pattern Designer
I’ve been in love with fabric design since I could remember. I learned to sew at a young age and one of my favorite things about the process was going to the fabric store to pick out the perfect prints. I remember dreaming that one day I would design my very own fabrics and use them to sew my designs.
I took class after class, but I just couldn’t crack the code.
For years I attempted to learn this craft to no avail. I took class after class, but I just couldn’t crack the code. Adobe Illustrator was a beast of a program to learn, and other programs weren’t much better. Until…
Enter Bonnie Christine, self-taught surface pattern design expert and instructor. After 11 years of forging her own path to becoming a fabric designer, she was now teaching everything she knew, not only about design, but about how to build a brand. Her Immersion course wasn’t cheap, and I had never succeeded in being able to do this, but I was just so determined that I could. I’ve always believed that if I can imagine doing something, then somehow I would find a way to do it.
So in February 2020, I took the plunge! It was scary and I didn’t even know if I would have the time to fully take advantage of what I would learn. I was working a 60 hour a week management job for Pete’s sake. But I kept getting these signs. It sounds crazy talking about it now, but there were these strange coincidences that kept leading me to the course sales page… Not kidding!! It wasn’t until the last day of sign up that I actually committed to going forward, and I haven't looked back since.
I’ve always believed that if I can imagine doing something, then somehow I would find a way to do it.
Unbeknownst to me, we would be on lockdown just weeks after I had signed up for the course, and I ended up having plenty of time to soak in the videos one at a time. It was the perfect distraction from all the stress of that shocking and life altering season. I was sooooo happy that I had taken the chance to do this for myself. I guess taking it by faith really pays off.
Bonnie Christine was an amazing teacher, making each step so easy to take in and actually understand. She even managed to make Adobe Illustrator less intimidating. I felt so empowered and my dream was finally coming true. I was encouraged to join a small Peer Group to support me along the way, so volunteered to lead a group of six. Before I knew it we all bonded and became fast friends. To this day we still meet each week to help and support each other, just like we did at the start of Immersion 2020.
I guess taking things by faith really pays off.

In summary, I’ve learned 3-4 years worth of industry and entrepreneurial knowledge in one year, made lifelong friends, and truly believe I can do anything I set my mind to, but there is so much more.
