No, that’s not a request… it’s a lovely art themed business, started by Chiquanda Tillie, that focuses on inspiring young girls to believe in themselves. Very cool stuff! I’ve been following her on Instagram for a while now, and I just never get enough. In a word, it’s cuteness overload!!!

So I reached out to Chiquanda and got a chance to ask her a few questions about how and why she started Tickle Me Purple, an online shop featuring children’s books, coloring books, stationary, stickers, and accessories. Read on to learn more about what motivates and inspires Chiquanda to reach out to her community.

Q: What made you decide to become a professional artist?

Chiquanda: I decided to become a professional artist because I have always loved art and making things.  Being an artist and seeing my creations come to life truly brings me joy.  Some of my very first gifts were art sets, so I’ve been preparing for this my entire life! Let the good times begin.

Chris: I also started as a child. It’s amazing to see the dream come to life as an adult isn’t it?

Q:  When did you know what your message was as an artist, and who you wanted to serve as a brand?

Chiquanda: I knew what my message was as an artist when I created my first rag doll for my niece.  The look on her face when she saw a doll that looked like her, encouraged me to explore my creative side even more.  I created a brand that promotes diversity, positivity, fun, and joy. I love that the items that I create bring happiness and representation in the world. I love to receive messages where individuals thank me for creating images that look like their child, grandchild, niece, or nephew.  I’m creating a brand that promotes positive and diverse images.

Chris: Well said! Diversity is just soooo crucial!! Everyone needs to feel included and most of all special. We all bring so much unique talent, passion, and expression into the world. It’s a shame to miss out on anyone’s gifts because they don’t feel like they have a voice.

Q.  Your company name is so joyful and fun! How did you come up with the idea?

Chiquanda: My company name came to me in a dream, as most of my ideas do! I remember waking up and jotting the name down on a notepad so that I would not forget it.  My company’s name is Tickle Me Purple, LLC. I love purple; it represents royalty and creativity! Most of the time when people are tickled, they laugh and experience joy.  Therefore, my company name represents my creativity and desire to bring joy to others through my work. As my slogan states, I create ticklish-ly delightful handmade products!

Chris: Your company name came to you in a dream? That is so magical, and no wonder it’s so special! Your art and designs truly are a delight, so mission accomplished. : )

Q. What would you tell an aspiring artist? Someone who only dreams of being where you are?

Chiquanda: I would tell an artist who is just getting started to keep going.  It will take time, patience, and determination to get to where you want to go but you must put in the work.  You can do anything you put your mind to, it all starts with you.  Positive thought and action work hand in hand and can take you a very long way.  Most importantly, don’t forget to have fun in the process!

Chris: I love this. There are times we all want to give up because it seems too hard… I absolutely agree that sticking with it when it’s the most difficult is what will give us the strength to make it down the line. Also, what a great reminder that fun and positivity are not a luxury. People will notice if you enjoy what you do or not, so it counts!

Q. How do you think you've impacted the black community with Tickle Me Purple?

Chiquanda: I have impacted the Black community by providing unique products that increase representation. My products feature positive characters that are reflective of the Black community. Such representation helps to inspire, uplift, instill pride, boost self-esteem, and motivate those within my community. I am helping to share unique experiences that will shape the minds of those for years to come.

Chris: I don’t think there is a better feeling than knowing you are bringing positive vibes to people while doing what you love! I still remember those who sought to make a difference for me as a kid, and I can see that you are having the same effect with your beautiful, and thoughtful books and coloring books. Way to go!!!

Chiquanda, thank you so very much for your insights and for sharing your world with us. I wish you continued success and I’m sure that great things are coming for you in the future!!
